PhD FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The NBMBAA National PhD Fellowship Program awards two fellowships annually to qualified individuals identified through our application process. Recipients are selected based upon their written response to a research topic, most recent grade point average, verbal communication skills, and level of extra-curricular activities and community involvement. The fellowship package includes monetary awards, travel, accommodations and registration to our annual Conference.  The fellowship amounts range from $5,000 to 15,000.

Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be a minority students enrolled in a full-time business, management, or related discipline doctoral program during the fall of 2008 or the spring of 2009.
  • Submit a competitive research paper on the following topic:
    • As current PhD candidate, what is the most pressing issue facing the African-American, Hispanic and Native American academicians in your field of study (pressing issue other than there are not enough PhD candidates of color)? 
      1. How will your entry into the university workforce help in the solving, reversing or neutralizing of this issue?
      2. How do you plan to neutralize, solve and /or reverse the trend?
      3. What resources outside of academia could be called upon to correct/reverse the trend?
      4. How would you suggest using this resource?
    • Mail official stamped transcripts from all graduate institutions listed.

Submission Guidelines:
Papers' references and format must follow Style Guide of the Academy of Management Journal and the criteria below. Papers that violate these guidelines will be penalized!

  • Submitted papers must be original and must not have been previously published or submitted elsewhere
  • Papers may draw from theory or research.
  • The length of papers must not exceed five (5) pages, excluding title page, abstract, exhibits, and reference list.
  • Papers should be typed in 12-point font and double-spaced throughout, with a 1-inch margin on all sides
  • Papers will be evaluated by a blind review process. Therefore, please do not include the author's name and affiliation.
  • Abstracts of no more than 50 words that state the title and provide a summary of the study, the main results, and the conclusions should be on a separate page.
  • All references mentioned in the text must appear in the reference list, and all items in the reference list must be mentioned in the text. Avoid the use of footnotes.
  • Pages should be numbered.

Research papers will be evaluated by the following criteria:

  • Are the core ideas original? Important? Provocative? Is the discussion of the relevant literature complete and accurate?
  • Are the ideas presented concisely and logically?
  • Does the paper advance our understanding of the topic? Is the contribution clear and important?
  • Is the paper conceptually adequate and rigorous? Is it technically adequate? Are the method(s) and analyses appropriate?
  • Is the paper well written and clearly presented?

Fellowship Recipients must:

  • Agree to become lifetime NBMBAA members (membership fees are deducted from the scholarship award)
  • Become an active member in your local NBMBAA chapter
  • Submit a high-resolution digital photograph to be used for public relations purposes
  • Submit a current curriculum vita or a resume
  • Travel to New Orleans, LA., September 22-26, 2009 for the 31st Annual Conference & Exposition
  • Participate in limited public relations activities at the NBMBAA® Annual Conference and throughout the year  
  • Attend the scholarship reception and the awards program during the annual conference in New Orleans, LA
  • Volunteer on Thursday, September 22nd, or Friday, September 23rd during the NBMBAA Annual Conference in. for a minimum of 4 hours
  • Agree to become a member of the NBMBAA® Scholarship Advisory Team & Scholarship Alumni Club
