2010 LOT Senior Scholarship Essay Contest
Eligibility
This essay contest is open to current high school seniors (graduating in 2010) who have participated in the LOT Program for at least 1 year. Students must have been active members of a LOT Chapter Program for at least 1 year. Graduating seniors who have previously received a National LOT Essay Scholarships are eligible to apply.
Competition Deadline
The contest application and scholarship must be received no later than Friday, August 13th to be eligible.

Essay Instructions
All essay submissions must follow the following guidelines:
- Typed & single spaced
- 12 pt font (Times New Roman)
- 1 inch margins
- 2 page minimum - 4 page maximum
Essays will be judged by the following criteria:
- Coherence (are your recommendations feasible?)
- Analysis of the topic (Have you considered multiple points of view and options?)
- Organization (does your paper flow smoothly and transition well from one thought to the next?)
- Correct spelling & punctuation
Selection Process
Essays will be anonymously evaluated utilizing the aforementioned guidelines and criteria outlined above. The following representatives will evaluate student essays:
1 NBMBA Foundation representative
1 NBMBAA Board Member
1 LOT Case Competition representative
2 National Black MBA Association staff members
Awards
Up to 25 graduating seniors (2010) will receive a $1,000 award, if their essay is selected. Awards will be announced by Friday, September 17th. Awardees may redeem their scholarship dollars after submitting a request, via email to lot@nbmbaa.org, with the information listed below. (Please note that awards are generally processed 4 – 6 weeks after receipt of request; awards will not be sent to the financial aid office; checks are prepared in the student’s name only.)
- Proof of enrollment in a school of higher education
- Student’s parent contact information (name(s), home address, email and phone number(s)), student’s contact information (email address and cell number) and school information (School name and address)
Essay Question
There has been much discussion about the high drop-out rate among high school students and the need for school reform. Drop-out rates are particularly high in the African American community. What specific recommendations would you make to decrease the drop-out rate? Please provide examples of your recommendations.
