National Black MBA Association® Chapter Development Process
The following procedure indicates the process for forming a chapter of
the NBMBAA®. A potential chapter will undergo three phases of development:
- Interest Group
- Interim Chapter
- Full Chapter
Before beginning this process, an individual interested in starting a chapter will
need to complete the following steps:
Getting Started
An individual(s) with the intent to form an interest group should compile a brief
summary detailing why there should be a new chapter in that area. The summary
should address the following points:

Do you have at least 5 additional individuals interested in chartering a chapter
at this time?
- (a) Please include their name, company, title and email, as applicable.
- (b) Indicate who are the top two leads for the chapter initiative.
What are the proposed geographical service and its merits as it relates to building
membership and serving the community?
- (a) Population
- (b) Percentage of African Americans
- (c) What organizations are currently there (i.e. NSHMBA, etc.)
- (d) What Affinity groups exist (i.e. Black Chamber of Commerce, etc.)
- (e) Other details you feel are pertinent
- (f) If possible, insert a copy of the area map
Are you aware of a chapter(s) in or near your city or has there ever been a chapter
in the city you are requesting?
- (a) Please list with est. distance to city or areas from proposed geographical
area of interest.
How did you hear about the organization?
- (a) If past chapter affiliation, please include chapter and specific role (i.e.
past president, committee co-chair, member, etc.)
Do you have at least two major corporations that you believe would interested in
supporting a chapter?
- (a) If you are aware that they are currently national corporate partners, please
note.
- (b) Indicate if a member(s) of current planning team has a relationship (state
the relationship, i.e. employee, etc.)
Do you have at least two Universities or colleges that you believe would be interested
in supporting a chapter?
- (a) Indicate if a member(s) of current planning team has a relationship (i.e.
dean, etc.)
Provide a brief overview of your plan regarding:
- (a) How will the interest group sustain and build membership?
- (b) Funding Strategy
- (c) Program development
Provide a list of current members.
Provide a list of potential members.
This request should be submitted to chapter.relations@nbmbaa.org
along with two contact names, phone numbers and email addresses. The National
Headquarters office will evaluate and respond to requests within 30 days to provide
direction and next steps toward becoming an official interest group.
